Pakistan on Tuesday (11) slammed India’s decision to hold G20 meetings in Jammu and Kashmir in May, calling the move “irresponsible”.
Both nuclear-armed neighbours claim Kashmir in full but rule in part and have fought a number of wars over controlling the region.
India is currently holding the presidency of the G20 and will set a leaders’ summit in New Delhi in September.
On Friday (7), India unveiled a full calendar of events leading up to the leaders’ summit, which included G20 and Youth 20 meetings in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and Leh, the neighbouring region of Ladakh, in May and April, respectively.
The foreign ministry of Pakistan issued a statement condemning the choice of venues. It said, “India’s irresponsible move is the latest in a series of self serving measures to perpetuate its illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir,” it said.
The ministry also accused New Delhi of acting in “disregard of the UN Security Council resolutions and in violation of the principles of the UN Charter and international law”.
“Pakistan vehemently condemns these moves,” it added.
India has long accused Pakistan of fuelling separatist insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, the country’s only Muslim-majority province.
Islamabad refutes the allegations and counter accuses India of violating human rights in the parts of Kashmir under its control. New Delhi denies the charges.
