PAKISTANI prime minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday (16) said his government will exit before the completion of its term as uncertainty grew over the tenure of the country’s incumbent National Assembly.

Addressing an event at the Government College Women’s University in Sialkot in Punjab province, the 72-year-old Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) of PML(N) leader said the government will complete its tenure next month and that they will leave before the completion of the tenure and an interim government will take over, Pakistan’s Geo News reported.

A few days ago, Sharif had claimed that the tenure of the current coalition government, which took over the office in April last year following the ouster of former prime minister Imran Khan, will conclude on August 14 and that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would declare the next election date in “October or November”.

Pakistan will also celebrate its 77th Independence Day on August 14.

Recently, Sharif also said in a televised address that his government was able to clear the “rubble of destruction” caused by the previous government led by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the previous four years.

General elections in Pakistan are generally held two months after the NA’s constitutional tenure concludes but if the government dissolves the lower house of the parliament before the completion of its constitutional term, the polling data can be pushed back to 90 days following the dissolution, the report added.

Sharif also said in his speech that the slide in the price of petroleum products announced by Pakistani finance minister Ishaq Dar was attributable to the country’s recent deal with the International Monetary Fund.

He claimed that the IMF deal strengthened the Pakistani rupee against the dollar, enabling cheaper purchase of oil. He also said that the

Sharif had earlier fielded for the return of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the supremo of PML (N) and his elder brother, saying the latter’s return will change the country’s destiny and appealed to the people to make their decisions after assessing the performance of the PML-N-led government.

No prime minister has completed an entire term of five years in the electoral history of Pakistan.
