FORMER Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan was on Saturday (5) arrested after a court sentenced him to three years in jail in connection to a corruption case. The trial court in Islamabad also barred the crcicketer-turned-politician from participating in active politics for five years.

An arrest warrant was also issued against the 70-year-old leader who served as the prime minister between 2018 and 2022 when he was ousted in a no-confidence motion.

Khan, one of the biggest cricketers Pakistan has produced, was found guilty of illegally selling gifts he received from foreign dignitaries while he was in office of the prime minister.

The gifts included watches given by a royal family, as per government sources, who have alleged previously that Khan’s aides sold them in Dubai.

According to the legal team of the former prime minister who has found himself in the middle of several legal challenges, they would file an immediate appeal, NDTV reported.

One of the members of the team said that no chance was given to the present witnesses and neither time was allotted to round up arguments, the NDTV report added.

Khan accused Pakistan’s powerful military after his tenure was cut short last year after getting defeated in a no-confidence motion. The military denied playing any role in the matter.

In May, violent protests started across Pakistan after Khan was briefly arrested on corruption charges, resulting in storming of the military headquarters by his supporters in Rawalpindi and another army establishment in Lahore.
