AVINASH ARUN DHAWARE, who directed the second season of the hit series “Paatal Lok,” describes the follow-up as “denser” and delves into the “darker lanes of human behaviour.”

The director, known for his work on “Killa,” “Three of Us,” and “School of Lies,” shared insights into the new season’s exploration of uncharted territories, such as Nagaland’s unique culture and politics.

The second season of “Paatal Lok,” which premiered on Prime Video on Friday, continues the investigation led by Delhi cop Hathiram Chaudhary, played by Jaideep Ahlawat.

While season one focused on an attempted murder of a journalist, the new season shifts to the murder of a prominent Nagaland politician in Delhi.

According to Dhaware, the idea for the second season came quickly after the first season ended, with creator Sudip Sharma suggesting Nagaland as the setting.

Dhaware, discussing the new season, stated, “We have gone into darker lanes of human behaviour. People will be surprised and shocked to see certain aspects. I’m very sure that the kind of psychological impact the show will have.”

He added that the show’s dense storyline, combined with its unique character arcs, makes it something that audiences will want to revisit.

“This season will get much better, like it has that rewatching quality to it because there are very few shows that you can watch in repeat screening.”

The writing for the second season took a year to complete, with delays pushing the shoot into 2022, and the filming concluding by March of the following year.

Despite the challenges, Dhaware emphasises the series’ serious tone and its ability to engage viewers with its gripping story. He credits the writers for creating a unique experience that keeps the audience hooked.

Dhaware’s long-standing collaboration with lead actor Jaideep Ahlawat, whom he met during their time at the Film & Television Institute of India, played a pivotal role in the show’s success.

“His empathy, his command over his craft, his understanding of many things… We go long back, like we worked together and studied in Film Institute,” Dhaware remarked.

The eight-episode series also stars Gul Panag, Tillotama Shome, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Jahnu Barua, and is produced by Clean Slate Filmz in association with Eunoia Films.
