Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday (18) poured cold water on the speculation that the Indian cricket team might travel to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup in 2023.

Shah, whose second term as the secretary began the same day, also said on the sidelines of the board’s annual general meeting in Mumbai that the 2023 edition of the tournament might be played in a neutral venue and not Pakistan. Shah is also the chief of the Asian Cricket Council.

The tournament is slated to be hosted by Pakistan and sources had said earlier that the Indian cricket board was open to sending the national team to the neighbouring country to play in the tournament.

India had last toured Pakistan in 2008 when they had gone there under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to play in the Asia Cup. The last time Pakistan visited India was in 2012-13 when the two sides played two T20 internationals and three one-day internationals.

Since then, the two sides have only met in multilateral events in neutral venues.

The recent-most games between the two arch-rivals took place in Dubai, UAE, where both teams won a game each.

The two sides will next meet in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, in what will be the opening game for both former world champions.
