WHILE India faced a diplomatic backlash from several Muslim nations, including those in the Gulf, after former spokesperson of the country’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nupur Sharma made controversial remarks against Prophet Muhammad on a television debate, New Delhi’s old ally Nepal came to its backing.

In the tiny Himalayan state, which is called the world’s only Hindu state, rallies were held in support of Sharma and Hinduism on Sunday (12). Thousands of Nepalese took to the streets in various parts of the state besides national capital Kathmandu chanting slogans in favour of Sharma who was suspended by the BJP in the wake of the backlash.

The protesters were seen shouting slogans such as ‘Jai Hindu’, ‘Jai Hindutva’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Also, posters saying ‘Those Hindus who don’t believe on Shiva and Ram are not of any use’ were also found.

In Birgunj, a Hindu saint said he will not sit in silence when the Hindu faith is at stake. He said that Hinduism was abused earlier as well. He spoke about the recent vandalisation of a Hindu temple in Pakistan. He said he is protecting his religion by taking out a peaceful procession. The Hindu supporters also raised slogans of ‘Pakistan Murdabad’.

Videos of the protests in Nepal went viral on social media and netizens in India supported them. They called the protesters from Nepal as younger brothers.

Some also said that what the Nepalese Hindus did was commendable as Hindus in India did not come out of their house in support of Sharma.
