NEERAJ SHRIDHAR, lead singer of Bombay Vikings, attributes his entry into Bollywood to the title track of “Bhool Bhulaiyaa,” despite multiple film hits to his credit, including “Race,” “Love Aaj Kal,” and “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.”
Originally recorded in 2007 with music by Pritam and lyrics by Sameer, the song launched his Bollywood career, he shared in an interview with PTI.
“When I sang the original, I was not used to singing Bollywood songs a lot. I had sung many songs for films like ‘Heyy Babyy’. Then, I did three songs for ‘Love Aaj Kal’ like ‘Chor Bazari’, ‘Aahun Aahun’, and ‘Twist’. There was ‘Race’. I also sang ‘Prem Ki Naiyya’ from ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’…But none of the songs had come out when ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ happened. All of a sudden, most of these songs came out around the same time. I owe it to this song (‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’). It brought me to Bollywood,” Shridhar said.
The singer recently returned to recreate the track for “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” teaming up with American rapper Pitbull and singer Diljit Dosanjh.
Shridhar described his initial approach to the song by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, who reached out after Shridhar’s work on the comedy “Bhagam Bhag.”
“Pritam also loved my music for Bombay Vikings. We clicked together right from the beginning,” he recalled, describing the recording sessions as feeling like “a concert in the studio.”
Fifteen years after the original hit, Shridhar recorded a few lines for “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2” and now returns for the third installment, with composer Tanishk Bagchi handling the music.
Shridhar praised Bagchi’s approach, saying, “He has fused the new melody with the old one by Pritam. He has done a wonderful job.”
Shridhar, who also produces music in Europe, hinted at a return to his Bombay Vikings style, saying fans can expect more music soon.
“Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3” releases on November 1 and stars Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit, Vidya Balan, and Triptii Dimri.
