INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (28) paid tribute to PV Narasimha Rao, India’s ninth prime minister, on his 102nd birth anniversary, by praising his visionary leadership and dedication towards the progress of the country.

In a tweet, Modi remembered Rao saying, “Remembering Shri PV Narasimha Rao Ji on his birth anniversary. His far-sighted leadership and commitment to India’s development was noteworthy. We honor his invaluable contributions to our nation’s progress.”

Rao, who was born in Laknepalli in current day Telangana on June 28, 1921, took over as the prime minister when his party — Indian National Congress — was going through a difficult time after the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. He successfully led a minority government between 1991 and 1996 and it was during his tenure that India carried out economic liberalisation. Another former prime minister Manmohan Singh was the finance minister in Rao’s government.

He passed away in New Delhi in December 2004 at the age of 83.

The Congress also paid tribute to Rao, calling him a distinguished statesman and credited him with reinventing India.

“On his birth anniversary, we remember the former PM of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao, who introduced some noteworthy liberal reforms to the Indian economy. Today, we pay a humble tribute to Mr Rao, a distinguished statesman who reinvented India, both at home & abroad,” the grand-old party tweeted.

Congress’s national president Mallikarjun Kharge said Rao’s contribution towards India’s economic transformation will always be cherished.

“Remembering Former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao on his birth anniversary. His tremendous contribution towards the economic transformation of India and nation-building shall always be cherished,” he tweeted.
