SEVERAL HUNDREDS of Indian-Americans turned up at iconic locations across the US on Sunday (18) night to send a welcome message to prime minister Narendra Modi, days ahead of his high-profile visit to Washington DC.
Members of the Indian diaspora from in and around the American capital were seen gathering near the National Monument on a bright sunny day to convey a message of unity and tell Modi that they were eagerly waiting for him in the city.
They chanted “Modi, Modi” and slogans of India-US camaraderie and took part in the Unity rally that progressed towards the Lincoln Memorial where they danced.
Similar scenes were witnessed in other big cities such as New York and San Francisco. Indian-Americans celebrated the Indian prime minister’s upcoming visit in places such as Times Square in the Big Apple and Golden Gate Bridge in the Golden Gate City.
Several thousands of Indian-Americans are also expected to attend the welcome ceremony that will be held on the South Lawns of the White House on Thursday (22) when US president Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden welcome Modi. They have invited the prime minister on a state visit and will host a dinner in his honour at the White House.
Demand for tickets to attend Modi’s address to a joint meeting of the US Congress was also high, just like those to witness the welcome ceremony at the White House.
Susan Bysiewicz, lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut, on Sunday extended a warm welcome to Modi and underlined that the Indian diaspora has made several contributions to the state.

“India and US have shared appreciation for democracy. Connecticut has a vibrant and growing Indian community. The Indian diaspora has made many contributions to our state. I hope that your visit is successful and I am confident it will pave the way for a stronger and closer partnership between India and the US, and India and Connecticut,” she said.
