INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (21) met Sanjay Mehrotra, president and chief executive of global semiconductor company Micron Technology after reaching Washington DC the same day. While Modi invited Micron to boost the manufacturing of semiconductors in India citing that the South Asian nation is capable of providing competitive advantages in various parts of the semiconductor supply chain, Mehrotra expressed his satisfaction over the meeting and called it “highly productive” and “extremely positive”.

The meeting took place just a couple of days after a media report spoke about the Modi cabinet approving Micron’s plan to set up a testing and assembly plant in the country. It was also part of the prime minister’s scheduled interactions with top chief executives, during his ongoing state visit to the US.

“I had an excellent meeting with PM Modi. I am very impressed with the vision that he has for India and the advances that India is making. We discussed a wide range of topics and we really look forward to greater opportunities in India,” the Micron chief said after the meeting.

It may be mentioned here that India and the US have officially inked a memorandum of understanding during the India-USA 5th Commercial Dialogue 2023, focusing on setting up a robust semiconductor supply chain.

The agreement, a strategic one, promises to fulfil India’s long-nurtured aspiration of emerging as a major hub for electric goods manufacturing.

Considering countries such as the US and China are dominant players in manufacturing chips, the deal is likely to benefit India by fostering a close cooperation in the semiconductor sector, leading to promotion of commercial opportunities and boosting growth of innovation ecosystems.

According to Business Today, Micron Technology was close to finalising plans for setting up an ATMP — assembly, testing, marking and packing in July 2022, following the Indian government’s scheme for semiconductors. Mehrotra was also supposed to visit India in August and meet officials at the ministry of electronics and information technology.

However, informed sources said the plans were put on hold due to the US CHIPS ACT which offered huge incentives for semiconductor fabs. In October 2022, following the US-CHIPS ACT, Micron Technology announced its plans to invest up to $100 billion to build a mega-fab in Clay in New York.
