Indian prime minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet his British counterpart Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 Summit which is set to kick off in Bali, Indonesia, on Tuesday (15).
Both the prime ministers have reached Bali, the venue of the summit in the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Modi’s plans of meeting other leaders were still “evolving”, the Hindu BusinessLine reported.
“PM Modi reached Bali on Monday evening for the G20 Summit. Most of his bilateral meetings are on Wednesday but the plans for Tuesday are still evolving,” BusinessLine cited an informed source as saying.
The Indian external affairs ministry was yet to confirm Modi’s meeting with Sunak but the latter’s statement made to the media on Monday (14) indicated that it was not far.
“… I’m looking forward to sitting down and building some strong relationships with other leaders like President Biden from America and the prime ministers of Japan, Australia and India,” Sunak said, adding that he hoped to have a talk to Jinping as well.
Modi and Sunak are yet to meet after the latter became the prime minister on October 25. Two days after his coming to office, Sunak had a telephonic talk with his Indian counterpart.
The upcoming summit is significant for India as Indonesian president Joko Widodo will symbolically hand over the G20 presidency to India at the end of the event on Wednesday (16).
India will assume the presidency of G20 from December 1.
On Monday, US president Joe Biden met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the upcoming summit amid growing tension between the two nations over various issues — political, economic, and security.
