INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the opposition in the parliament on Thursday (10) while speaking on the ongoing debate on the no-trust motion against his government in the Lower House. His remarks came amid the opposition’s strong demand for his statement on the ethnic violence in Manipur in the parliament.

The no-trust motion was also initiated over Manipur.

Taking a strong dig at the opposition, Modi said the country reposed faith in his government time and again and he considered the no-confidence motion as God’s blessing. The prime minister said such a motion was brought five years ago as well and on that occasion, he had said that such a motion is not a floor test of the government but the opposition.

Citing the result of the 2018 motion, Modi said the opposition fell had fallen short and when the ruling party went to the public, they announced their no-confidence in them. He said the ruling National Democratic Alliance led by his Bharatiya Janata Party received more votes (India went to general elections in 2019 and Modi returned as the prime minister with a thumping majority, getting more seats than that in 2014).

“In a way, the opposition’s no-confidence motion is lucky for us. You have decided that the NDA and the BJP will return with a massive mandate,” he said.

India goes to its next general elections in 2024 and both Modi and his BJP have expressed confidence that they would return for the third term.

The prime minister also accused the opposition of showing little sympathy for the poor and only eyeing power. He also said that they were worried about their own future and not that of the country’s youth.

Modi also spoke in the language of cricket in his speech, saying while the opposition set the fielding, they continued to hit fours and sixes. “We kept hitting centuries, they kept bowling no balls,” he said. He also taunted the opposition saying they did not prepare even after he gave them five years to come back to power.

He said the opposition cannot hear anything good about the country.

“In 2014, after 30 years, the country’s people made a government with a full majority. In 2019, they did the same and brought us back with a bigger mandate. We have given the youth a corruption-free government. We have given them an opportunity to fly high. And what did our opposition do in this time? They unsuccessfully tried to break the people’s confidence with this non-confidence motion,” Modi said.

The prime minister, who had predicted in 2018 that the opposition would bring a no-confidence move against his government in 2023 which proved to be true, said that the country believes when they would bring a no-confidence motion again in 2028, India will be among the world’s top three economies.
