INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi has kept his promise of writing a letter to a girl who had brought with herself a sketch of the leader she had drawn at an election rally in Kanker in the poll-bound central Indian state of Chhattisgarh on Thursday (2).

Modi had asked the officials to collect the sketch from the girl named Akanksha after noticing her sketch from the stage. He requested her to sit down saying she would get tired by standing for long hours and promised that he would write her a letter. He also asked her to give her postal address so that he could write to her.

The prime minister made time soon amid his busy schedule to write Akanksha, who hails from Kanker, a letter in Hindi on Friday (3) in which he blessed her and thanked her for her drawing.

“Dear Akanksha, Good luck and blessings. The sketch you brought to Kanker’s program has reached me. Thank you very much for this loving expression,” Modi wrote.

“May you move forward with great success and bring glory to your family, society and country with your successes. With best wishes for your future,” he added.

“The next 25 years are going to be important for young daughters like you. In these years, our young generation, especially daughters like you, will fulfill their dreams and provide a new direction for the future of the country,” he wrote in the letter.

“India’s daughters are the bright future of the country. This affection and belongingness that I receive from all of you is my strength in the service of the nation. Our aim has been to build a healthy, safe and well-equipped nation for our daughters,” Modi added.

“I have always received a lot of love from the people of Chhattisgarh. The people of the state have also contributed enthusiastically in the path of progress of the country,” the letter read.

Modi’s government has taken care about the welfare of girls and women in the country. While coming up with scheme such as ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (Save the girl child, educate the girl child), it also passed a bill in both houses of the parliament in September for reserving 33 per cent of the seats for women in both the Lower House of the parliament and legislative assemblies of India’s states.

Chhattisgarh, which Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost in the 2018 election after ruling for 15 consecutive years, is currently governed by the Indian National Congress. The BJP is eyeing a return to power in the state which will see a two-phase election on November 7 and 17. Results of the election will be announced on December 3, along with those in four other states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Mizoram.
