INDIA’S ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday (28) night got into a huddle to discuss the strategy for the general elections of 2024, reports said. The meeting was convened at the residence of the prime minister and some leaders of the party, including home minister Amit Shah and BJP’s national president JP Nadda, were present.
The meeting took place just days after Modi returned from the US where on the one hand, some big business deals were signed between the US and India, and on the other, Modi faced uncomfortable questions from an American journalist during a joint press meet with president Joe Biden over India’s minority rights.
According to sources, a major reshuffle in the government and organisation may have been discussed in the meeting that lasted for more than five hours.
The BJP was yet to release an official statement on the meeting that came against the backdrop of Shah, Nadda and BL Santhosh, the party’s general secretary, organisation, holding marathon talks over organisational and party politics.
The meeting also took place a day after Modi batted in favour of the uniform civil code while addressing the party’s grassroots workers in Bhopal in the poll-bound central state of Madhya Pradesh. Implementing the uniform civil code is an agenda that has always been a part of the BJP’s manifestos.
The saffron party’s meeting also took place at a time when four states of India are set to go to polls. Among them, the BJP is in power in only Madhya Pradesh. The other three are Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. After the defeat in the state of Karnataka to the opposition Indian National Congress in May, the BJP is putting extra effort on the next set of state elections before the big battle of 2024.
Last month, a number of federal ministers and senior organisational members of the BJP carried out a month-long mass contact programme to mark the ninth anniversary of the Modi government.
Last week, a number of opposition parties came together in Patna in the eastern state of Bihar to float the idea of a grand alliance for the 2024 elections.
