INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (1) greeted the people of the two western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat on the occasion of their statehood day.

Both the states were carved out of the erstwhile Bombay State on May 1, 1960, after the Bombay Reorganisation Act came into effect on the linguistic lines. Maharashtra, the third-largest state of the country, was for the Marathi-speaking people, while Gujarat, the fifth-largest, for those who speak Gujarati. In terms of economy, Maharashtra is India’s most developed state, while Gujarat is the third-most developed state.

In a post on X greeting the people of Maharashtra, Modi, said, “Maharashtra Statehood Day is about celebrating the glorious legacy and indomitable spirit of this land which has produced great visionaries and is associated with cultural richness. Maharashtra stands tall as a beacon of tradition, progress and unity. We also reaffirm our commitment to keep working for Maharashtra’s progress. My greetings to the people of Maharashtra.”

In the constituency of Surat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already won unopposed after the opposition Indian National Congress’s Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination was rejected and other candidates withdrew.

In Maharashtra, 11 of the 48 constituencies will vote in the same phase.

Indian home minister Amit Shah, who is also from Gujarat and is the second most powerful leader in the BJP after Modi, also greeted people of both the states on the occasion of their foundation day.

“Best wishes to all Gujaratis on the occasion of Gujarat Foundation Day. Famous for its rich culture, generous hospitality and natural beauty, Gujarat has made an unforgettable contribution to the unification of the country, right from the independence movement. Today, Gujarat is making an important contribution to the development of the country with its hard work, dedication and cooperation. On the foundation day, I wish the best progress and all round development to the sisters and brothers of Gujarat,” Shah, who will contest the upcoming general elections from Gujarat and was campaigning in the state of Wednesday, said.

To the people of Maharashtra, he said in a post, “Happy Maharashtra Day! Happy Foundation Day to Maharashtra, a country with rich cultural heritage, undying love and dedication to the motherland and an important partner in the country’s development.
