Young Indian cricketer Arshdeep Singh found himself under a burden of criticism after he dropped a relatively easy catch at a vital moment of the match against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday (4).
The Indian fans were left split over Team India’s performance with many slamming Singh, a left-arm seamer. However, the situation turned worse when the Wikipedia page of the Sikh cricketer said he was named in the ‘Khalistan’ squad. The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement which aims to create a homeland for the Sikh community by setting up a sovereign state of ‘Khalistan’.

India’s ministry of electronics and information technology summoned executives of Wikipedia in India seeking an explanation on how Singh’s Wikipedia profile was changed to reflect a Khalistan connection.
A report in India Today cited sources close to the ministry saying that the Indian government felt the changes could cause disharmony in the country. They said the edits in the page could lead to law-and-order situation for Singh’s family.
The Wikipedia page was later restored.
Wikipedia is a knowledge-sharing website which also allows people to edit content but seeks peers from all across the world to review the changes.
Singh dropped the catch in the 18th over and India went on to lose the match by 5 wickets. They now will have to win against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka to make the finals of the tournament.
