THE Narendra Modi government should first begin reservation of women in the Lok Sabha or the lower chamber of the parliament and the states before talking about implementation of the uniform civil code, Sharad Pawar, chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said in Pune in the western state of Maharashtra on Thursday (29).
Speaking at a press conference, the 82-year-old leader also said that prime minister Modi had become restless after the opposition parties’ huddle in Patna in the state of Bihar last week. He also confirmed that the next meeting of the opposition parties, who plan to take on Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party in next year’s general elections unitedly, will take on Bengaluru instead of Shimla on July 13-14.
Remarking on the debate on the uniform civil code, Pawar said the NCP will make its stand clear after assessing suggestions and demands made by various communities. But before that, reservation should be given to women in the Lok Sabha as well as state assemblies to meet the long-pending demand, Pawar added.
He also took a dig at the Modi government over the turmoil in the north-eastern state of Manipur, saying the latter was not taking any steps to bring the situation under control.
