INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday (13) went on a late-night “inspection” in his constituency Varanasi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh following a busy schedule in the day.

The prime minister inaugurated the first phase of the mega Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor project besides offering prayers at a number of temples. He also met chief ministers of a number of states ruled by his Bharatiya Janata Party.

Modi later posted a series of tweets that showed him touring the holy city with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath by his side.

Modi has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Varanasi in both 2014 and 2019 general elections although he belongs to the western Indian state of Gujarat.
The prime minister and chief minister visited parts of the city and the local (Benaras) railway station.

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is also a key state politically and the BJP is aiming to return to power in the state again in the assembly elections scheduled in early 2022. A good show in the state will bolster the saffron camp’s chances to do well in the 2024 general elections and get its third consecutive mandate.

Modi has been making frequent visits to Uttar Pradesh in recent times to appeal to the electorate and the teaming up of the prime minister with the chief minister reiterated that the ruling party is keen to play up its “double engine government” plank in the run-up to the state elections.

The BJP also put up a show of solidarity through the events in Varanasi as all of its chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from across the country reached the temple town. Modi also held a review meeting with them.

A number of other states besides Uttar Pradesh will also go to polls next year, including Gujarat.
