Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday (31) turned emotional at an event in Banaskantha region of the western state of Gujarat as he recalled the tragic incident that claimed at least 140 lives in Morbi situated in the same state.
The accident happened on Sunday (30) when a century-old pedestrian bridge over Machchhu river collapsed, throwing all people standing on it into the water. Several people also got injured.
Modi, who is in Gujarat for a three-day visit, said he was in a dilemma over whether he should cancel the event in Banaskantha where he went to lay the foundation stone and dedicate development projects.
A video of the event showed Modi, who was speaking in Gujarati, trying to control his emotions.
“A horrible tragedy happened in Morbi. I was very disturbed. I was in a dilemma about whether to cancel the event or not,” he said.
“But for your love and affection I gathered strength and came here,” he added.
