INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi is known for exploring unique sites, whether it is for religious or travelling reasons. He was found meditating inside a cave at the Kedarnath shrine in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in the past. Earlier this year, he went snorkelling in the picturesque Indian island chains of the Lakshadweep.

This time, he chose to offer prayers at the Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka in his home state of Gujarat. On Sunday (25), the Indian prime minister dived deep into the Arabian Sea to reach the submerged ancient city of Dwarka and called it a “divine experience”. He said he felt “connected to an ancient era of spiritual grandeur”.

Modi wrote on X later, “To pray in the city of Dwarka, which is immersed in the waters, was a very divine experience. I felt connected to an ancient era of spiritual grandeur and timeless devotion. May Bhagwan Shri Krishna bless us all.”

He also shared pictures of himself underwater, wearing scuba gear and offering prayers, as he explored the ‘lost city’ of Lord Krishna.

Besides wearing a diving helmet bearing the Indian flag and a traditional attire, Modi also had with him a bunch of peacock feathers, generally associated with Lord Krishna. He was assisted with professionals as he completed his mission underwater.

It is said that Dwarka was the abode of the lord after he defeated his maternal uncle King Kansa, who was the ruler of Mathura. As per Hindu belief, the city went under the sea following Krishna’s departure from Earth.

“Today, I experienced those moments with will stay with me forever… I went deep in the sea and did ‘Darshan’ of the ancient Dwarka city. Archeologists have written a lot about the Dwarka city hidden underwater. In our scriptures also, it is said about Dwarka that it was a city with beautiful gates and tall buildings, as tall as the top of the world. Lord Krishna himself constructed this city,” PM Modi said as he addressed a rally after his underwater visit to the site.

“When I went deep in the sea, I experienced the divinity… I bowed down in front of Dwarkadhish. I took a peacock feather with me and placed it at Lord Krishna’s feet. I had always been curious to go there and touch the remains of the ancient Dwarka city. I am full of emotions today… A decades-old dream was completed today,” Modi said.

The prime minister had a busy schedule in his home state ahead of the general elections. He laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation several projects worth more than Rs 4,150 crore in Dwarka. Among them is the Sudarshan Setu, the longest cable-stayed bridge in India that connects the Okha port in the mainland with Beyt Dwarka Island located more than two kilometres away. It has been built at a cost of Rs 980 crore.
