Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Monday (3) granted bail by a court in Surat in the western Indian state of Gujarat in a 2019 defamation case. The court suspended the leader’s sentence till the disposal of his appeal.
The court will hear his appeal against conviction on April 13.
The 52-year-old Gandhi had moved a plea in the court to set aside the order that convicted him in the case for a remark that was seen as an insult to prime minister Narendra Modi.
Gandhi, according to sources, requested for an interim stay on the conviction that would restore his membership of the Indian parliament which was scrapped a day after his conviction on March 23.
The former president of the Congress was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and chief ministers of three Indian states that are ruled by the Congress, including Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the Congress was putting pressure on the judiciary by allowing many people to go with Gandhi.
