Modi condoles Tutu’s death: ‘A guiding light’

INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (26) condoled the death of South Africa’s archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu and called him a “guiding light”.

In a tweet, he said, “Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was a guiding light for countless people globally. His emphasis on human dignity and equality will be forever remembered. I am deeply saddened by his demise, and extend my heartfelt condolences to all his admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and veteran of South Africa’s struggle against apartheid, in Century City in Cape Town, South Africa, on Sunday at the age of 90.

The renowned human rights activist was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the late 1990s. In recent years, he was hospitalised several times for treatment of infections related to his ailment.

Tutu won the Nobel Prize in 1984 for his non-violent opposition to apartheid. A decade later, he witnessed the end of the regime and chaired a Truth and Reconciliation Commission which was set up under the government of Nelson Mandela to unearth atrocities committed during the dark era.
