INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (7) completed two decades as an elected representative and top leaders of his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) congratulated him on the occasion.

Modi first became the chief minister of his home state of Gujarat on October 7, 2001, replacing the late Keshubhai Patel. He then went on to win three successive state elections in 2002, 2007 and 2012 to extend his tenure as the chief minister to 13 years. He left the chief ministership midway in 2014 to become India’s prime minister. He is currently serving his second term in the top post after victories in 2014 and 2019 general elections. He has been elected to the Indian parliament from the constituency of Varanasi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

A number of ministers of Modi’s government congratulated him on the occasion on Twitter. Amit Shah, the home minister and the No.2 in the government, said the prime minister has dedicated 20 years of his life to the welfare of the poor.

“I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on completing 20 years of public service as Head of state and Central governments. In 20 years of dedication towards welfare for the poor, he achieved the impossible through his strong will,” Shah, who was the home minister of Gujarat when Modi was in power in the state, tweeted in Hindi.

Indian defence minister Rajanath Singh lauded Modi for completing 20 years in public life.

“Hearty congratulation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for completing 20 years in public life while holding a constitutional post. He has dedicated the unblemished 20 years being devoted to public welfare. His popularity has been increasing continuously and may continue to grow,” Singh tweeted in Hindi.

“PM Narendra Modi ji completes 20 glorious years of governance today. His leadership from Gujarat to Delhi stands on the solid ground of a transformative agenda for India,” India’s commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said.

BJP national president J P Nadda said Modi pulled the country out of an atmosphere of disappointment and put it on the path to progress and becoming “vishwa guru” (world leader). The prime minister has worked like a “karma yogi” and infused people with self-confidence about making a new India, he added.

Modi, who turned 71 last month, has been the longest-serving chief minister of Gujarat and is the first prime minister to have been born after Independence.
