THE GOVERNMENT has decided to set up a memorial for former president Pranab Mukherjee at the ‘Rashtriya Smriti’ area complex.
Mukherjee died on August 31, 2020.
Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of the former president, met prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and thanked him for honouring her father.
In a letter to Sharmistha Mukherjee, the government said it has decided to earmark site within the ‘Rashtriya Smriti’ complex (a part of the Rajghat precinct) for erecting a samadhi of Pranab Mukherjee.
After receiving the letter, Sharmistha Mukherjee sought an appointment with the prime minister to thank him.
Mukherjee told PTI that she was happy that the government had recognised the contribution of her late father towards the nation.
The demand for Mukherjee’s memorial comes in the wake of demands by the Congress for having a memorial for former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who died at AIIMS at the age of 92 on December 26.
Sources said the government has already agreed to set up a memorial for Singh and a site is being finalised at the same Rashtriya Smriti area in consultation with his family. (PTI)
