British multinational retailer Marks & Spencer Group Plc may slash jobs at its 4,000-person head office and the numbers could be in hundreds, the Sunday Times has reported.

The report comes less than a month after the company opened its second outlet in Ahmedabad in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

A spokesperson for the retailer, however, told The Times that the figure was “simply inaccurate” and did not immediately respond to a request from Bloomberg.

It has been reported that M&S has been working through a turnaround after making several decades to jumpstart its business.

Some of its biggest challenges have been about tackling expensive store portfolio, boosting online sales and continuing to be competitive in clothing.

The newspaper also said in its report that the retailer is considering the idea of giving up the lease on its headquarters by Paddington railway station in London when it comes up for renewal in another five years.

In November, the company said while presenting its half-year results that it was eyeing more than 150 million in cost saving in the new financial year.
