ACTOR Manoj Bajpayee has hailed the 1986 Shashi Kapoor-starrer “New Delhi Times” as the best Indian film about journalism, crediting its ability to delve deeply into the profession.

Bajpayee, known for roles in “Satya” and “The Family Man”, compared his upcoming movie “Despatch” to the classic, stating it offers an unflinching portrayal of investigative journalism.

“Other films have hardly been able to touch upon a journalist’s life. They weren’t able to go in deeper. But if there is a film that captures all that darkness, swamp, and dangers, I can proudly guarantee, it’s Despatch,” Bajpayee said in an interview with PTI.

Directed by Kanu Behl of “Titli” fame, “Despatch” follows crime journalist Joy Bag as he confronts a perilous investigation threatening to unravel his personal and professional life.

The movie, streaming on ZEE5 from Friday, delves into the challenges and fears faced by journalists in their line of work.

“We also show the grey side of a journalist’s personality and life. We are trying to understand what all goes on in his mind, the person who is not a journalist at home but is a journalist in the field and what all challenges he is facing in life,” Bajpayee explained.

The actor noted that the film explores the media’s struggles during a transition from print to digital journalism. “How the old players of print journalism were struggling with the arrival of digital journalism, the film also touches upon that aspect,” he said.

“Despatch” premiered at the MAMI Film Festival and was later showcased at the 55th International Film Festival.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, the cast includes Shahana Goswami and Riju Bajaj.
