Manipur violence: 142 dead, nearly 6k cases, state informs Supreme Court

The government said security development was being reviewed on a daily basis and a standard of procedure has been put in place in case there is an emergency.

ONE hundred and forty two people have lost their lives in the violence in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur since May 3, its government led by chief minister N Biren Singh told the Supreme Court of India on Monday (10), NDTV reported.

Vineet Joshi, the state’s chief secretary said in a fresh report filed before the bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha that 5,995 first information reports have been filed in the state so far while 6,745 people have been taken into custody.

The state government also told the top court that six cases have been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation for further probe, the NDTV report added.

As many as 5,000 cases or arson have taken place across Manipur since May and the districts of Imphal East and Imphal West reported the most number of deaths, according to the state government’s report.

The state government, which is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of prime minister Narendra Modi, listed steps it has taken to maintain law and order in the state.

It said the security development was being reviewed on a daily basis and a standard of procedure has been put in place in case there is an emergency.

The state government also said that 184 army columns besides more than 120 companies of paramilitary forces on deployed on the ground to ensure peace.

Informing the supreme court about the steps it has taken to restore normalcy, the state government said it was trying to link students staying in relief camps with nearest schools. It also said that many competitive examinations have been conducted.

Steps were also taken to relax internet ban in the state on a case-to-case basis. Internet connectivity in Manipur has remained suspended for two months now.

The Manipur government also requested the petitioners not to name tribes during their arguments, saying it might adversely impact the ground situation.
