IN a tragedy, at least 10 people were confirmed to have died after a massive fire broke out at a private hospital in Gohalpur in Jabalpur district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Monday (1). Three people were also said to be critically injured, Jabalpur district collector Allaiya Raja told India Today. The police said the fire could have been caused by a short circuit.

The incident took place at New Life Multispecialty Hospital in Gohalpur’s Chandal Bhata area.

Fire engines were rushed to the spot to bring the fire under control. Patients from the ill-fated hospital were reportedly shifted to other hospitals.

Jabalpur superintendent of police Siddhartha Bahuguna said four among the dead succumbed to their injuries on the spot after suffering severe burns.

“More than a dozen people are also injured. The dead are being identified,” he said.

Reports said most of the people who were either dead or injured got trapped inside as there was only one exit in the hospital. The fire engines struggled to bring things under control in the beginning. It was only after the electricity department disconnected the electricity supply that the fire was brought under control after an hour’s struggle.

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condoled the deaths. Expressing his grief, he tweeted in Hindi, “In this hour of grief, the bereaved families should not consider themselves alone. The entire Madhya Pradesh and I are with them. The state government will provide assistance of Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand to the seriously injured. The government will also bear the cost of complete treatment of the injured.”

Kamal Nath, a senior opposition leader in the state, also extended his condolences to the bereaved kin and prayed for a speedy recovery to those injured.

“Several people died and many casualties were reported in a fire that broke out in a private hospital in Jabalpur. This is a very painful incident. I pray for the rest of the departed souls and wish a speedy recovery to those injured in the fire,” he tweeted in Hindi.
