TERRIBLE accidents and deaths and injuries caused by them on highways in India in dense fog are not new. But recently, a mishap on a highway in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh resulted in something bizarre — theft of a large number of chickens!
Yes, you read it right.
The incident happened last week on the highway between Delhi and Agra in dense foggy weather conditions when a lorry carrying chickens was involved in a crash. The collision resulted in a pile-up of vehicles and even a death and many injuries.
But when commuters came to learn about the accident of the chicken-carrying vehicle, they arrived and started looting the birds, overlooking the injured driver of the vehicle. They fled the spot carrying the chickens in sacks.
A journalist named Piyush Rai posted a video of the incident on X that showed people bundling the chickens in sacks and fleeing the scene hastily.
In the post made on December 27, Rai wrote, “In UP’s Agra, a lorry carrying chickens met with an accident in a road pile up due to dense fog. Commuters can be seen grabbing chickens and fleeing from the spot. Some bundled them in sack.”
The driver, identified as Sunil Kumar, said he requested for help but people ignored him and were more focused on looting his vehicle. According to a report by India’s Times of India, he said he tried to stop people from stealing the birds but was unsuccessful since they were in large numbers.
The chickens were worthy nearly Rs 250,000 (£2,359) and the theft meant a heavy financial loss for the driver, the news outlet reported.
Heavy fog continued to disrupt traffic in northern India, reducing visibility to less than 50 metres in some areas of Delhi. More than 100 flights were also affected, besides traffic on road and rail routes.
