ACTOR Lisa Mishra, best known for her singing career, emphasised her determination to separate her acting from her music and content creation as she transitioned into her first web series, “Call Me Bae”.

The 30-year-old plays Harleen Babbar, a strong-willed news producer in the Prime Video comedy-drama released in 2024.

Reflecting on her decision to take up acting, Mishra said, “I was clear when I got this role that this should have nothing to do with me being a musician or a content creator. I like that I was able to keep the role separate from my career as a musician and content creator.”

The series, directed by Colin D’Cunha and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, stars Ananya Panday in the lead role and is set in the competitive world of TV journalism.

For Mishra, her character Harleen mirrors aspects of her personality, particularly the internal conflict between sticking to values and achieving success.

“I am very much that person that struggles sometimes between doing the right thing and what makes you successful or get ahead in life,” she said.

Having moved to the US at the age of six, Mishra said working on a Karan Johar-backed show felt surreal. “I know ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ by heart. Imagine my shock when I learnt that I was going to be on a Dharma show. It doesn’t hit me even now,” she added.

Mishra, who launched her career as a YouTuber in 2007, said she takes acting seriously and wants to maintain clear boundaries between her different professional personas.

“Lisa Mishra, the actor, and Lisa Mishra, the singer, are two separate human beings. If I can design the rest of my career to be like that, I will be really happy,” she said.

The actor, now based in Mumbai, will reprise her role as Harleen in the second season of “Call Me Bae” and is set to appear in Netflix’s “The Royals”.
