A TEAM of senior CBI officers reached Kolkata on Wednesday morning to investigate the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor in the city, sources at the central agency said.

The CBI team, which comprises medical and forensic experts, will visit the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s seminar hall where the body of the trainee doctor was found on August 9, they said.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of the probe from the Kolkata Police to the central agency.

A source in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that the agency has filed an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in New Delhi in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the doctor.

“Today, our officers will seek the call details of the deceased woman and those on duty on that day. They may submit the FIR in a local court,” another central agency source said.

The CBI may take Sanjay Roy, who was arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with the case, into its custody during the day, he said.

Two CBI officers on Tuesday evening went to the Tala Police Station here and took documents related to the Kolkata Police’s investigation.

The court directed the city police to hand over the case diary to the central probe agency by this evening, and all other documents by 10 am on Wednesday.

Healthcare services hit

The healthcare services were severely hit at almost all hospitals across West Bengal as doctors continued their ceasework on Wednesday, protesting the rape and murder of a woman doctor.

Long queues were seen at ticket counters of outpatient departments (OPDs) of all government hospitals where senior doctors joined their junior counterparts to protest against the crime.

“We have no new demand. We have seen that attempts have been made to provide a shield to a group of persons. Some people have tried to tamper with the evidence by starting construction work on the same floor of the RG Kar hospital where our sister was raped and murdered. We do not see any reason to stop our protest,” an agitating doctor told PTI.

The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors had called for a ceasework at the outpatient departments of all governmental and private hospitals in the state.

Junior and senior doctors, interns and house staff were seen wearing blackbands on their arms and shouting slogans, demanding justice for the woman doctor.

“The emergency services are on. But unless we protest, the victim will not get justice. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to some patients,” he said.

The agitating junior doctors, who have been pressing for a magisterial probe into the killing of the woman doctor, on Tuesday set a deadline of August 14 for the Kolkata Police to complete their investigation.

Midnight protest

Senior TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray condemned the alleged rape and murder of the doctor and said he would hold a dharna in solidarity with a midnight protest scheduled to be organised by women on Wednesday.

Women in the eastern metropolis and districts of West Bengal are scheduled to hit the roads at midnight as a mark of protest against the killing of the trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“Today I will sit on an individual dharna from 5 PM to 9 PM to register my protest and express my solidarity with women who will hit the streets tonight. Due to my age, I won’t be able to join them at midnight but I express full support to them,” Ray told PTI.

Last night in a post on X, the TMC MP had said he would join the protesters as he has a daughter and a granddaughter.

“Tomorrow I am going to join the protesters particularly because I have a daughter and little granddaughter like millions of Bengali families. We must rise to the occasion. Enough of cruelty against women. Let’s resist together. Come what may, ” he posted on the microblogging site.

Later, when a social media user posted that he might be thrown out of the party, Ray said, “Please need not worry for my fate. Blood of a freedom fighter flows in my veins. I’m least bothered.” (PTI)
