THE INVESTIGATING officers of the CBI are looking into the call details and chats of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, in connection with their probe into the rape and murder of a woman doctor.
Ghosh, who appeared before the CBI officers on the third consecutive day on Sunday, was asked to furnish details of the phone calls he made before, and after the incident at the hospital, an officer of the central probe agency said.
The sleuths are also mulling contacting the mobile phone service provider to get the details of Ghosh’s phone calls and data consumption, he added.
The former principal, who was grilled by the agency’s officers for over 13 hours from Saturday till past midnight, reached the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake at 11 am on Sunday.
“We have a list of questions for him,” the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer told PTI.
Ghosh was asked to specify his role after getting the news of the death of the doctor, who he had contacted and why he made the parents wait for nearly three hours, he said.
The ex-principal was also questioned who had ordered the renovation of the rooms near the seminar hall at the emergency building of the hospital after the incident.
“We are trying to find out whether there was any conspiracy or pre-planning to the crime. What was the principal doing and whether he is involved with the incident in any manner,” the officer said.
The CBI sleuths would be verifying Ghosh’s replies with the versions of other doctors and interns who were on duty along with the deceased doctor at the chest medicine department on the night of the incident.
So far, CBI has grilled over 20 people, including a couple of officers of the Kolkata Police, in connection with its investigation.
Ghosh declined to take any question from the media while leaving the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake past midnight on Sunday.
The CBI officers grilled Ghosh first on Friday and then for around 13 hours on Saturday in connection with their investigation.
The former principal had resigned from the post two days after the woman’s body was found on August 9. He had expressed fears of being attacked, prompting his lawyer to seek protection from the Calcutta High Court. The court directed him to approach a single bench.
The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day in this connection.
Summons to former BJP MP
Kolkata Police have issued summons to former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and two renowned doctors for allegedly spreading rumours and disclosing the identity of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered, an officer said.
Apart from these three people, the police have issued summons to 57 others for spreading wrong information about the incident, he said.
Dr Kunal Sarkar and Dr Subarna Goswami were issued summons to appear before officers of the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar at 3 pm on Sunday, he added.
These people have been accused of revealing the identity of the victim, spreading rumours and fake news, the officer said.
When contacted, renowned cardiologist Dr Sarkar said he has received the summons from the police asking him to appear before the officers at Lalbazar.
“But at the moment, I am out of town and have informed the Kolkata Police about that. I do not know why they have called me, but it seems that some of my comments on social media have elicited certain reactions nationally and internationally,” Sarkar told PTI.
Dr Goswami, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Purba Bardhaman district, said that he is yet to receive the summons.
He told PTI, “I do not know why Kolkata Police will issue summons to me when they are not investigating the case. I have been saying that I will cooperate with the probe in every possible manner. I didn’t reveal the identity of the victim or spread any rumour.”
Chatterjee, the former BJP MP of Hooghly constituency, said she has not received any summons yet.
“It would have been better if they had shown the same promptness while investigating the case. Everyone wants justice for the girl,” she said.
Incidentally, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, during a press conference on Friday, said there has been a lot of rumour-mongering which has affected their investigation and posed threat to law and order.
Prohibitory orders
Kolkata Police imposed prohibitory orders near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from Sunday till August 24, banning meetings and assembly of more than five persons, an order stated.
The hospital had become the centre of agitation following the rape and murder of a woman doctor in the medical establishment.
Kolkata Police has clamped Section 163 (2) of BNSS around the hospital. The prohibitory orders have been imposed from the vicinity of the hospital till Shyambazar five-point crossing, the order said.
Any person contravening the order shall be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, it added. (PTI)
