India batter KL Rahul, who was leading Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has ruled himself out of the remaining part of the T20 tournament as well as the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) scheduled in England in June.
The 31-year-old received an injury during a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday (1) and is set to undergo a thigh surgery. He said about the development through a lengthy post he made on Instagram. All-rounder Krunal Pandya took over the captaincy of LSG in Rahul’s absence.
“After careful consideration and consultation with the medical team, it’s been concluded that I’ll be undergoing a surgery on my thigh shortly. My focus will be on my rehabilitation and recovery in the coming weeks. It’s a tough call to make, but I know it’s the right one to ensure a full recovery,” Rahul, who has played 47 Tests for India besides 54 one-day internationals and 72 T20s scoring more than 6,000 international runs, wrote in his post.

“As the team captain, it pains me deeply not to be able to be there during this crucial period. But, I’m confident that the boys will rise to the occasion and give their best performance as always. I’ll be cheering for them from the sidelines with all of you, watching every game. @lucknowsupergiants
“Absolutely gutted that I won’t be at the Oval next month with Team India. I’ll do everything I can to get back in blue and help my country. That has always been my focus and priority. @indiancricketteam
I want to express gratitude to each one of you – my fans, that gave me the strength to get back up, the LSG management and the BCCI for their promptness, and my teammates for their unwavering support during this difficult time.”
While Rahul’s injury will be a blow to Lucknow’s chances of making the playoffs this season despite being placed second in the points table at the moment, the Indian cricket board is expected to name a replacement for the batter who also chips in as the wicket-keeper.
India will play their second successive WTC final and this time, they will take on Australia at The Oval between June 7 and 11.
