ACTOR and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut announced that her film “Emergency” will hit theatres on January 17, 2025.
The announcement follows the team securing a censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), after missing its initially planned release on September 6.
Ranaut, who portrays former prime minister Indira Gandhi in the political drama, shared the new release date on her official X page, writing: “17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. #Emergency – Unveils Only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!”
The film, written, directed, and co-produced by Ranaut, explores the emergency declared by Indira Gandhi between 1975 and 1977 and its far-reaching consequences. Previously delayed due to certification issues, Ranaut had accused the CBFC of intentionally stalling the process, calling it “hugely demotivating.”
The project has also faced criticism from Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, for alleged misrepresentation of the community.
Despite the controversies, “Emergency” marks a significant venture for Ranaut, with a cast featuring Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.
The film is jointly produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
