KANGANA RANAUT shared the trailer of her upcoming political drama “Emergency” on Monday, highlighting the journey to its release as a challenging experience.

The film, which depicts the 1975 Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, is scheduled for release on January 17, after missing its initial September 6 date due to CBFC clearance delays.

The film faced criticism from Sikh groups, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, for alleged misrepresentation of their community. Addressing the release, Ranaut said, “I’m glad that our film ‘Emergency’ will finally hit the big screen on 17th January. This story isn’t just about a controversial leader; it delves into themes that remain profoundly relevant today.”

Set against the backdrop of the Emergency period, the film examines the political and societal impacts of Gandhi’s 21-month suspension of democratic processes.

Ranaut’s social media post about the trailer reads: “1975, Emergency – A Defining chapter in Indian History. Indira: India’s most powerful woman. Her ambition transformed the nation, but her #EMERGENCY plunged it into chaos.”

The star-studded cast includes Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Choudhary as Pupul Jayakar, and Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.

Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the film seeks to provoke reflection on democratic values.

Producer Umesh KR Bansal noted, “As we mark 50 years since the 1975 Emergency, this film isn’t just a historical retelling—it’s a reflection on the resilience of democracy and a tribute to those who fought to protect it.”

With a Republic Day-adjacent release, Emergency aims to encourage audiences to engage with themes of freedom and governance.
