As Ajay Devgn celebrated his 56th birthday on Wednesday (2), his wife, actress Kajol, took to Instagram to share a heartwarming yet humorous birthday wish that left fans in splits. The post offered a glimpse into their enduring bond, characterised by playful banter and deep affection, which has been a cornerstone of their over two-decade-long marriage.
Kajol shared a picture featuring the couple, where she looked chic in a printed black outfit, while Ajay sported a casual black T-shirt and denims, complete with glasses. He was captured smiling affectionately at Kajol, who glanced away from the camera.
The caption accompanying the photo was quintessential Kajol – witty and full of love. She wrote, “All the cool people were born in August but we don’t mind wishing u a happy birthday (winking face and partying face emojis )…. thank u for always being older than me (folded hands emoji).”

The endearing birthday wish is a testament to the unique dynamic of Kajol and Ajay’s relationship, which, as the initial part of this reflection highlights, blossomed unexpectedly. Despite being “polar opposites” and initially not getting along when they first met on the sets of Hulchul in 1995, their connection deepened over time. Kajol herself admitted to having “bitched about” Ajay before even meeting him. However, their on-set conversations led to a strong friendship, eventually evolving into a loving relationship.
Their journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Both were in other relationships when they first connected, but those soon faded. Despite Ajay’s “reputation,” Kajol found him to be different with her. Their courtship involved numerous dinners and drives between Juhu and South Bombay. After four years of dating, they decided to tie the knot.
However, their decision to marry wasn’t met with unanimous approval, particularly from Kajol’s father. As Kajol recounted in an earlier interview with Humans of Bombay, her father was initially against the marriage and didn’t speak to her for four days. He wanted her to prioritise her flourishing career. Despite his initial reservations, Kajol was firm in her decision, and her father eventually came around. Interestingly, their decision to marry was mutual, without a formal proposal.
Ajay and Kajol had a low-key wedding ceremony at his home on February 24, 1999. They have since built a strong family with their two children, daughter Nysa and son Yug.
