CANADIAN prime minister Justin Trudeau, whose government has found itself locked in a serious diplomatic spat with its Indian counterpart over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Surrey in British Columbia in June this year, on Sunday (15) wished the Hindu community in his country on the occasion of the nine-day long Navratri festival that kicked off the same day.
“Happy Navratri! I’m sending my warmest wishes to members of the Hindu community and all those who are celebrating this festival,” the leader posted on X.

The Canadian leader’s wishes came a month after he accused India of being involved in the shooting of Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara. India strongly reacted to the allegation saying it was absurd and motivated and both countries expelled a diplomat of the other country.
India even suspended issuing visas to the Canadian citizens and asked the Trudeau government to reduce its diplomatic presence in the South Asian nation. It was recently reported that the foreign ministers of the two countries had a secret meeting over the issue in Washington, US.
Trudeau though said Canada was not looking to accelerate the conflict.
He had telephonic talks with a number of world leaders in recent times, including British prime minister Rishi Sunak, who sought de-escalation of tension between the two democracies. He also spoke with the president of the UAE and king of Jordan and was trolled online for raising the India issue with them.
India has accused the Trudeau government of playing vote-bank politics when complaining about unrestrained anti-India activities on Canadian soil.
Meanwhile, an exclusive survey carried out by India’s NDTV revealed that Trudeau’s ratings plummeted to an all-time low after he brought the allegations against India over the death of Nijjar.
