Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud was on Monday (17) appointed as India’s 50th chief justice, the country’s law minister Kiren Rijiju said.

The judge, who was appointed by Indian president Droupadi Mumru, will take oath on November 9, a day after incumbent chief justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit, who took over in August, demits office on attaining the age of 65. While Lalit had a brief tenure of two-months-and-a-half, Chandrachud will serve as the chief justice for two years (November 2024).

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22,” Rijiju wrote on Twitter.  He also wished the latter on his new role.

The law ministry shared a statement later.

On October 7, the Indian government wrote to Lalit to recommend his successor’s name. Four days later, he recommended the name of Chandrachud, 62.

However, even before Chandrachud’s name was recommended by Lalit, he was widely believed to be the next chief justice, as he was the second senior-most judge in the Supreme Court, only after Lalit.

Chandrachud, who was born in Bombay (current-day Mumbai), is the second person from his family to become the chief justice of India. His father Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud had served in the post between 1978 and 1985.

He had been the chief justice of Bombay high court between 2000-13 and Allahabad high court between 2013-16.
