INDIAN cricket fans were in for a pleasant surprise on Monday (31) as ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah made a comeback into the national side after a long injury break, not just as a player but also as the captain.
The 29-year-old cricketer will lead his country in a three-match away T20 series against Ireland to be played between August 18 and 23. Opening batter Ruturaj Gaikwad will be his deputy.
Bumrah, who missed Asia Cup and T20 world cup last year and also this year’s Indian Premier League, has not played for India in a T20 since September last year due to his back injury. Millions of Indian fans are eagerly hoping to see him return in the national jerseys in the 50-over world cup at home in October and November.
Indian cricket board’s secretary Jay Shah recently said that Bumrah’s recovery from his injury has been rapid. He also indicated that the ace bowler is fit and ready to play in the upcoming T20 series in Ireland.
Bumrah underwent a surgery in New Zealand in March this year and has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for a while. He also recently bowled 10 overs in a match against a visiting Mumbai side at the Alur Grounds in the southern city.
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer, however, was skeptical that Bumrah would be able to bowl with the same intensity.
“He is a huge part of the bowling attack. I feel he will have an extremely important role in the World Cup. We are missing him in death bowling. We have missed him this entire year. However, he needs to come back to fitness, and there will be a question mark whether he will be able to bowl the same way, at the same pace,” the 45-year-old said on Jio Cinema.
It will not be the first time, however, that Bumrah will lead India in international cricket.
Last year, he led his country in the fifth Test match against England in Edgbaston but India lost the match by seven wickets despite taking a 100-plus run lead in the first innings.
Bumrah, who is playing international cricket since 2018, has claimed 319 wickets so far.
