BRITISH actor Jason Isaacs recently shared his reflections on the stark wealth gap he observed while filming “Hotel Mumbai” in India, a movie based on the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Speaking to PTI in a roundtable interview, Isaacs said, “We travelled around India a lot and we saw the highs and the lows and the massive wealth gap there. It does make you reflect on what material possessions mean… It’s something that I think about all the time.”
Isaacs, known for roles in “The Patriot”, “Black Hawk Down”, “The Death of Stalin”, and the “Harry Potter” series, described his experience in India as transformative, saying it was the first time he deeply reflected on the meaning of material possessions.
Currently, Isaacs stars in season three of HBO’s “The White Lotus”, which focuses on the dynamics between wealthy tourists and resort staff. The new season is set in Thailand, where Isaacs again encountered similar socio-economic disparities.
“I made some friends but also got to see a country where people live very differently with massive disparity,” he said.
“For me, different cultures, different politics, and different attitudes to life and death made it a very three-dimensional experience.”
Isaacs plays Timothy Ratliff, a US-based financier whose vacation with his family takes a dark turn when he learns of a financial crisis back home.
“There’s a pressure cooker which is exploding… His entire life and future. Along with all the other sex, drugs, and tofu that Mike [White] writes about, this series has questions of identity and what is the self,” Isaacs explained.
The White Lotus, created by Mike White, has previously explored locations such as Hawaii and Sicily. White chose Thailand for the latest season to delve deeper into themes of spiritual journeys and personal transformations.
Isaacs praised White’s nuanced writing, noting, “What he does so brilliantly is that you meet the characters and you think you understand who they are… but he’s far too sophisticated for that.”
He added that the show’s complex characters and scenarios spark discussions after the credits roll.
The ensemble cast of the season three includes Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Michelle Monaghan, and Lalisa Manobal, among others.
