India’s Reliance has rubbished speculation that billionaire Mukesh Ambani, the world’s eighth richest person, is planning to buy English football team Liverpool FC, saying it is not true.

A spokesperson for the company called the news “fake”.

British daily The Mirror reported over the weekend that Ambani had enquired about the club.

“But he will have to fight off interest from other parties from the Middle East and the USA with Liverpool’s current owners Fenway Sports Group having been swamped with tentative offers. It’s understood they are willing to sell for £4bn and there is a greater desire to buy the Merseyside club outright. But that figure won’t put off Ambani who is a huge sports fan,” The Mirror reported.

In another report, The Mirror said the Indian businessman was reviving his interest in buying Liverpool 12 years after an unsuccessful takeover bid.
