Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday (16) witnessed history when Arjun Tendulkar, son of legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, made his debut in the tournament for Mumbai Indians (MI).

It was two years since he was first signed by the franchise that Tendulkar, 23, got to play his first game. He was included for the match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma who got a stomach bug. Suryakumar Yadav captained MI who won the game by five wickets.

With the junior Tendulkar, a left-arm seamer, making his IPL debut, the tournament saw a new record of father-son duo appearing for the same franchise.

Sachin Tendulkar played for MI for six seasons between 2008 and 2013, scoring 2,334 runs in 78 matches at a strike rate of 119.8 and hitting one century (2011 season) and 13 fifties. His son’s debut took place exactly a decade since Tendulkar retired.

“Father and Son turning out for the same franchise 10 years on. A historic first in the IPL. Good luck Arjun Tendulkar,” former India cricketer Irfan Pathan tweeted.

Arjun, however, did not get any wicket in his first match, conceding 17 runs in two overs after opening the bowling.

Sachin, who was associated with MI as a player first and now as mentor, tweeted about his son’s IPL debut and congratulated him over the start of his journey. Later, his daughter Sara dropped an emotional reaction on the former cricketer’s Instagram post.
