People from the so-called upper caste community in a village in the southern Indian state of Karnataka ‘purified’ a local water tank with cow urine after a Dalit woman drank water from it.

According to a report by NDTV, the woman, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste, attended a wedding ceremony at Heggotara village in the state’s Chamarajnagar district on November 18, drank water from the tank in an area where people from the so-called upper castes reside.
Soon after, the outraged local people released the remaining water from the tank and cleaned it with ‘gau mutra’ (cow urine), which is considered holy in Hindu religion.
“The water tank was cleaned, but I can’t confirm if it was with gau mutra,” IE Basvaraj, a local official told NDTV, adding that no one had seen the woman drinking water from the tank and she could not be located.
“We are trying to identify and locate her. Once it happens, we will file a case (of discrimination),” Basvraj added.
The village has several tanks that display messages that everyone can drink from them.
There are several tanks in the village with written messages that everyone can drink water from there.
The local authorities took several villagers from the Dalit and Other Backward Classes communities to all the tanks in the area and made them drink water, the report added.
The official will now file a comprehensive report to the district collector over the matter for further action, it was learnt.
