The Group of 20 (G20) stands as the foremost global platform for fostering inclusive growth and India’s current presidency has significantly amplified the voices of the Global South, creating an unprecedented G20 dynamic, according to Vikram Doraiswami, the Indian high commissioner to the UK.

During an interview commemorating India’s 77th Independence Day at the India House in London, Doraiswami, who recently returned from India, reflected on prime minister Narendra Modi’s innovative approach for the G20.

The approach involves showcasing different regions of India throughout G20 meetings, culminating in the summit featuring the member states’ leaders in New Delhi in September.

Scheduled for September 9 and 10, the G20 summit in New Delhi is poised to be one of India’s most significant diplomatic events, anticipated to attract an assembly of world leaders.

Doraiswami also highlighted Indian president Droupadi Murmu’s speech on the eve of the Independence Day as a reaffirmation of India’s role in steering G20 discussions in favour of developing nations. The G20 is a consortium of leading economies from 19 nations and the European Union.

“As far as the G20 is concerned, it is the premier forum for the world to try and create better opportunities for inclusive growth for all countries,” Doraiswami told the PTI.

“And getting us, as the President’s speech said, to be able to nudge the global dialogue in the right direction, whether it is in terms of the digital development agenda, whether it is in terms of poverty alleviation, in terms of the voice of the South; all of this has been India’s effort to try and create a truly unusual G20 – not just in terms of the locations that we’ve showcased, but also in terms of the agenda,” he added.

The high commissioner also highlighted Modi’s vision for the “Amrit Kaal,” the forthcoming 25 years leading to India’s centenary of independence, aligning it with the G20 theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – One Earth, One Family, One Future.

The perspective envisions a transformed India by its centenary, fueled by self-belief and India’s contributions to the G20 serve as a testament to this belief.

Regarding the impending visit of British prime minister Rishi Sunak for the leaders’ summit in India next month, Doraiswami hinted at a sense of anticipation, suggesting a well-prepared reception.

He expressed hope that Sunak’s experience during this visit would inspire his return, underscoring the tight timeframe of the summit while anticipating bilateral interactions.
