THE Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (23) announced the India squad for two Tests and three one-day internationals against the West Indies starting next month.
Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, earned his maiden national call, as did pacer Mukesh Kumar. Jaishwal, 21, was the top scorer in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup which India lost in the final to Bangladesh and was picked in the IPL the same year.
Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been India’s No.3 for a long time now in the long format, was dropped for the Caribbean tour.
Rohit Sharma was picked as the captain for both the series and while Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a fighting 89 followed by a 40-plus knock in in the recent World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, his comeback match after more than a year, was made the vice captain for the Tests, all-rounder Hardik Pandya was selected as the deputy in the one-day internationals.
India will also play five T20s in the series, the squad for which is yet to be finalised.
Maharashtra opener Ruturaj Gaikwad was picked in both squads while veteran pacer Umesh Yadav, who played in the WTC final, was axed from the Test squad. Meanwhile, wicket-keeper-batter Sanju Samson was also recalled to the one-day side.
“The men’s selection committee has picked India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series and three ODIs against the West Indies. India are also scheduled to play five T20Is and the squad for the same will be announced later,” the BCCI said in a statement.
The first Test will be played between July 12 and 16 at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, Dominica, while the second match will be played between June 20 and June 24 at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad.
The three one-day matches will be played at Barbados on July 27 and July 29 and Trinidad and Tobago on August 1.
