India’s domestic air passenger volume rises 70.5% in Oct

INDIA’S domestic air passenger volume in the month of October went up by 70.46 per cent to 89.85 lakh (8.98 million) over the same month in 2020, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which regulates the country’s civil aviation, said. In October 2020, India’s carriers had flown 52.71 lakh (5.27 million) passengers.

Domestic and international flight services remained shut till May 25 when scheduled air services resumed in graded manner. Scheduled international flight operations to and from India still have remained suspended.

Market leader IndiGo flew in October last year 48.07 lakh (4.8 million) passengers, accounting for 53.5 per cent of the total domestic traffic. Air India, which has now got a new owner in Tata Group, flew 10.61 lakh (1.06 million) passengers with an 11.8 per cent of the market share, Press Trust of India cited data as showing.

Full-service carrier Vistara, which is a Tata-Singapore Airlines Limited joint-venture carrier, flew 6.96 lakh (0.69 million) passengers the same month, claiming 7.8 per cent of the total pie.

Go First (erstwhile GoAir) and SpiceJet transported 8.84 lakh (0.88 million) and 8.10 lakh (0.81) passengers, respectively, in October, weaning away 9.8 per cent and 9 per cent share of the total domestic passenger traffic.

In terms of average on-time performance in operations from India’s four key airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, market leader IndiGo recorded the highest at 88.8 per cent followed by Vistara at 88.1 per cent and AirAsia India at 86.9 per cent, as per data.
