ADANI Power, a subsidiary of Adani Power Limited, has commenced power exports to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW plant located in Godda in the eastern state of Jharkhand. The company announced the commercial operations date (COD) for the second unit of the Godda ultra-supercritical thermal power plant, which has a capacity of 2×800 MW.

The reliability run test, including commercial operation tests, was successfully completed on June 25 in the presence of officials from the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh (PGCB).

The first unit of the power plant, with a capacity of 800 MW, had already achieved its COD on April 6. With the supply of power from the Godda plant, Bangladesh will experience enhanced energy security. Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) will supply 1,496 MW net capacity power to Bangladesh under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with BPDB in November 2017. The power will be transmitted via a dedicated 400 kV transmission system connected to the Bangladesh grid.

The statement from Adani Power highlighted that the power supplied from the Godda plant will positively impact Bangladesh’s power situation by replacing costly power generated from liquid fuel, thereby reducing the average cost of power purchased by Bangladesh. The company emphasized that the completion of the Godda ultra-supercritical thermal power plant and the dedicated transmission line within approximately 3.5 years, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrates the successful cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

Adani Power is the largest private thermal power producer in India, with an installed thermal power capacity of 15,210 MW across various power plants in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, the company operates a 40 MW solar power plant in Gujarat. The commissioning of the Godda ultra-supercritical thermal power plant is considered a significant milestone for Adani Group, BPDB, and the economic relations between India and Bangladesh.
