In January 2023, Kandula, a 23-year-old Master’s student from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, was hit by a speeding police vehicle in the city of Seattle and died on the spot. However, a court in the US dropped criminal charges against the accused officer and the prosecutor said that criminal charges could not be pursued against the officer due to “lack of sufficient evidence”.
India had sought review of the court’s decision.
