Indian titles drive Netflix’s Q2 growth

INDIA has become a significant driver of Netflix’s revenue growth in the second quarter of 2024, thanks to the popularity of several Indian titles.

According to the streaming service’s second-quarter earnings report released on Thursday, India emerged as the third country in revenue per cent growth.

The success of Indian content has been substantial, with titles such as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila leading the charge.

Heeramandi garnered 15 million views, making it Netflix’s most-watched Indian drama series ever. Amar Singh Chamkila achieved 8.3 million views, further cementing the appeal of Indian biopics on the platform.

In addition to these original productions, licensed films like Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies and Ajay Devgn’s horror drama Shaitaan also contributed to the streaming giant’s success in India.

The UK also reported strong performance in Q2, with Baby Reindeer standing out. This UK series earned 11 Emmy nominations and amassed 88.4 million views, demonstrating significant international appeal.

Other UK titles such as The Gentlemen, One Day, and Fool Me Once spent multiple weeks on Netflix’s global TV top 10 list, highlighting the country’s contribution to the platform’s diverse content library.

Looking forward, Netflix’s upcoming Indian slate for 2024 includes a mix of non-fiction and fiction titles. In the non-fiction category, viewers can anticipate Modern Masters Feat.

SS Rajamouli”, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, and Yo Yo Honey Singh. For fiction, the most anticipated returning series are Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein season two, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, The Great Indian Kapil Show S2, and the third season of Fabulous Lives Vs Bollywood Wives.

New projects set to debut this year include Anubhav Sinha’s gripping drama IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, as well as Do Patti and Vijay 69.

These titles are expected to continue driving viewership and engagement, bolstering Netflix’s growth in the region.
