THE death of a 20-year-old Indian student in China’s Tianjin city, located around 80 miles southwest from the capital Beijing, was a homicide and a foreign national has been arrested in connection to the incident, the Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday (3) said.
The suspect’s nationality has not been revealed, according to officials.
Aman Nagsen, who was from Gaya in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, was studying business administration in the Tianjin Foreign Studies University. On July 29, he was found dead in a dormitory.
The Chinese foreign ministry told PTI that around 8 pm local time on the day, the local police in Tianjin received a call that an “Indian student was lying on the floor of the dormitory with no sign of life”.
“The initial investigation of the public security organ found it to be a case of homicide and the suspect is another foreign student of the university. Compulsory measures have been taken on the suspect and the case is still under further investigation. Relevant Chinese competent authorities have notified the Indian Embassy in Beijing of the situation of the case on July 30 and 31 respectively and maintained communication with the Embassy,” the ministry said.
It added that the Chinese side will handle the case as per the law and offer help in following up. An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday (3).
According to officials, the death certificate is likely to be issued in a few days since it is a case of homicide.
Nagsen was one of the few Indian students who remained in China through the coronavirus pandemic. Sources in the embassy said his family has been informed about the progress of the probe.
An official from the embassy is expected to visit Tianjin to discuss the progress of the case and make arrangements to send the body back to India. Currently, no flights are operational between the two neighbouring countries owing to the pandemic.
